Ovid's Metamorphoses at Center of Major Exhibition Between Amsterdam and Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Galleria Borghese in Rome have partnered for 'Metamorfosi. Ovidio e le arti', a major exhibition exploring the legacy of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Frits Scholten, the show opens in Amsterdam before moving to Rome on June 23, where it will run until September 20, 2026. The exhibition examines metamorphosis across cosmos, matter, and human condition, highlighting the tension between order and transformation. It features works by Correggio, Michelangelo, Titian, Rubens, Poussin, Gérôme, Rodin, and Brancusi, alongside Bernini's Apollo and Daphne and Pluto and Proserpina. A focus is placed on the Ovide moralisé, a medieval rewriting that influenced Renaissance interpretations. The Rome venue is particularly resonant as Villa Borghese's architecture and decoration were inspired by Ovid, with 18th-century restorations by Antonio Asprucci reinforcing this theme.
