Over Journal: Irish Photography Magazine Born During Pandemic

Over Journal, a critical magazine on photography and visual culture for the 21st century, released its second issue in July 2021. Founded during the pandemic as part of the 2020 PhotoIreland Festival in Dublin, the independent publication is edited by Aidan Kelly Murphy, Julia Gelezova, and Ángel Luis González. It aims to foster a broad transversal conversation between photography and visual culture, featuring texts, essays, and visual works from creatives, artists, researchers, and curators. The magazine also includes a back cover dedicated to civically engaged artistic practices; the second issue featured the Archive of Public Protests with a manifesto on civil rights. Contents of the second issue include reflections on technology and its visual applications, focusing on the non-ocular image of the M87 black hole and its aesthetic implications; photographer Jean Curran's examination of Kodachrome and color theory's impact on Hitchcock and Hollywood cinema; photography as a tool for protest; visual culture as political critique; Burkina Faso through Federica Landi's lens; and Tel Aviv via Iris Hassid's images.
