Over 500 amateur films on food and Italian culture go online

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Fondazione Home Movies has launched a new thematic section on its Memoryscapes platform dedicated to food in Italian amateur cinema. Over 500 clips from more than 150 film collections, digitized from home movies shot between the 1920s and 1980s, are now freely available online. The footage captures food as a collective ritual—family meals, weddings, christenings, holidays like Christmas and Easter, and local festivals such as the Ferragosto fair in Rimini (1961). Regional culinary diversity is highlighted, from Sicilian cannoli to homemade pasta and gnocco fritto. The project offers an unprecedented glimpse into 20th-century Italian culture, evolving customs, and gender roles through the lens of private filmmaking.
