Over 400 historic private residences open to public across Italy on May 22
The National Day of the Italian Historic Houses Association (ADSI) returns on Sunday, May 22, 2022, for its 12th edition. Over 400 private historic residences—including castles, palaces, villas, farmhouses, courtyards, and gardens—will open their doors to the public free of charge across 19 Italian regions. The event aims to showcase lesser-known architectural heritage usually inaccessible, and to raise awareness among civil society and institutions about the socio-economic role of historic houses. According to organizers, these properties generate positive impact on multiple supply chains: artisan restoration, tourism (catering, accommodation, property visits), conferences, events, agriculture, and wine. Many skilled professions—artisans, restorers, master glassmakers—gravitate around these estates, though such ancient crafts are increasingly hard to find. 54% of these historic properties are located in small towns with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, and 29% in towns under 5,000 residents. Owners have organized exhibitions, concerts, and theatrical performances to engage audiences of all ages. This year also sees the return of a photography contest in collaboration with Photolux for Instagram users. A full list of openings and events is available online.
