Over 100 Unseen Photos by Gianni Berengo Gardin in Alessandria

A new exhibition at the Sale d’Arte in Alessandria, titled "Cose mai viste. Fotografie inedite" (Things Never Seen. Unpublished Photographs), presents over 60 previously unseen photographs by Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin (born 1930). The show emerged from a deep archival study conducted with his daughter Susanna Berengo Gardin and curator Giovanna Calvenzi, which uncovered 114 unpublished images—only five of which had been published before. The selection focuses on the people Berengo Gardin encountered throughout his career, spanning the United States in the late 1960s, Spain during the final years of Franco's dictatorship, and Italian scenes documenting the country's transformation. A special section features photographs taken thirty years ago during the reenactment of the Battle of Marengo (1800), published in the volume "Gianni Berengo Gardin – Marengo, 1994" with texts by historian Giulio Massobrio. The exhibition also coincides with the release of a new book by Contrasto, offering a comprehensive overview of the photographer's work. Berengo Gardin, now 94, has produced 263 books and thousands of images over his long career, often compared to Henri Cartier-Bresson for his ability to capture decisive moments.
