Outside In Exhibition at MAP Bengaluru Bridges Artist and Artisan Through Meera Mukherjee and Jaidev Baghel
At the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) in Bengaluru, the exhibition Outside In showcases the works of sculptor Meera Mukherjee and bronze caster Jaidev Baghel, focusing on the distinctions between artists and artisans in relation to caste, class, and language in India. Mukherjee, who has been active since the 1950s, revolutionized Bengali sculpting and created notable pieces such as Rath Yatra and Rain (c. 1980), which reflect labor themes. Baghel, hailing from the Gadhwa artisan community in Chhattisgarh, began learning metal casting at the age of eight and advanced Dhokra art to larger sculptures, exemplified by Seated Madin (2007). Their collaboration started in the 1960s. The exhibition juxtaposes Mukherjee's Mother and Child (c. 1990) with Baghel's Madin with Her Child (2007) and features Mukherjee's textile creations. It is open until 20 October.
