Outlook Exhibition Transforms Athens' Industrial Axis into Cultural Corridor
Outlook, a major international contemporary art exhibition, opened in Athens from October 25, 2003, to January 25, 2004, as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Curated by Greek-born, Berlin-based Christos M. Joachimides, the show featured 85 artists from 21 nationalities across three converted industrial buildings along the busy Piraeus Avenue, spanning 5,000 square meters over three kilometers. With a modest budget of 2.3 million euros, it presented a broad survey of international contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and videos. Many works were site-specific, inspired by Athens. Notable contributions included Beat Streuli's giant photo panorama of Athenians, Eija-Liisa Ahtila's three-screen video drama, Jan Fabre's giant turtle, and Wim Delvoye's lace-metal construction vehicle with Gothic cathedral motifs. Historical references like Beuys, Basquiat, and Nauman anchored the show. Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos announced the state would purchase works after the exhibition to bolster national museum collections. The exhibition aimed to position Greece on the international art scene, compensating for the country's lack of contemporary art institutions. Visitors faced a challenging journey through chaotic traffic and poor infrastructure to reach the venues, turning the visit into an urban expedition that helped develop the post-industrial periphery into a cultural axis.
