Oulipo's Origins: From 1960 Seminar to Literary Experimentation Group
The Oulipo (Ouvroir de littérature potentielle) emerged from Selitex (Seminaire de littérature expérimentale), established in autumn 1960. This foundational moment followed a colloquium at Cerisy-la-Salle titled "Une nouvelle défense et illustration de la langue française," which focused on Raymond Queneau's work. François Le Lionnais was among the group's founders. The organization dedicated itself to exploring potential literature through constrained writing techniques and systematic procedures. Its formation marked a significant development in 20th-century literary experimentation, moving beyond traditional creative methods. The group's activities were documented in artpress issue 420 from March 2015.
