Osvaldo Borsani Retrospective at Triennale Milano and Villa Borsani Opening

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Villa Borsani in Varedo, Milan, designed by architect, designer, and entrepreneur Osvaldo Borsani, will open to the public for the first time through the project Villa Borsani: Casa Libera!. Curated by Ambra Medda, the initiative revitalizes the private residence—inhabited by Borsani's heirs until ten years ago—with contributions from designer Harry Were, floral stylist Sophie Wolanski, and interior designer Katie Lockhart. The villa, completed in the mid-1940s, features unique pieces by artists Fausto Melotti, Lucio Fontana, Adriano Spilimbergo, Guglielmo Ulrich, and Agenore Fabbri, reflecting the creative exchange in mid-20th-century Italian art, architecture, and design. Medda describes Borsani as a visionary who combined creative talent with entrepreneurial foresight, often overlooked in design history. Additionally, a retrospective at Triennale Milano, curated by Norman Foster and Tommaso Fantoni (Borsani's grandson), opens on May 16, showcasing over 300 objects including unique pieces, industrial icons, and archival materials. The Archivio Borsani will publish the monograph "Osvaldo Borsani Architetto, designer, imprenditore" by Giampiero Bosoni, edited by Skira, in April 2018. After Milan Design Week, Villa Borsani remains open until September 15 by appointment.
