Oslo's Architectural Renaissance and Art Scene: A Travel Guide

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Oslo, despite its small size and high cost of living, offers a rich architectural and art scene. The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, designed by Snøhetta and opened in 2008, is a landmark social sculpture with marble exteriors and interiors by Olafur Eliasson. Nearby, Monica Bonvicini's sculpture 'She Lies' (2007) floats offshore. Recent architectural highlights include the Bjørvika Barcode project (2005-16) by MVRDV, the Astrup Fearnley Museet (2012) by Renzo Piano in the Tjuvholmen district, and the upcoming National Museum (by Kleihues + Schuwerk, opening 2020) and Munch Museum 'Lambda' (by Herreros Arquitectos, also 2020). The latter will feature Tracey Emin's 'Mother' sculpture. The osloBIENNALEN's first edition includes interventions by Gaylen Gerber at Edvard Munch's studio in Ekely and at Myntgata 2, and a performance by Marianne Heier at the former Contemporary Art Museum. The private gallery scene is modest, with notable spaces like Standard (founded 2005), VI, VII (2012), Galleri Golsa (2015), Galleri Riis (1972), Galleri K (1985), and Galleri Brandstrup (2000). Artist-run spaces include Noplace and Melk. The historic Kunstnernes Hus dates to 1930. Outdoor attractions include the Botanical Garden (1814), Ekeberg Parken with over forty sculptures by artists like Rodin, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Damien Hirst, and the Holmenkollen ski jump.
