Oscar rule changes: multiple nominations allowed per category from 2027
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its guidelines for the Oscars scheduled on March 14, 2027. In a return to earlier practices, actors may receive multiple nominations within the same category if their performances are among the top five vote-getters. Non-English films can now qualify for Best International Feature by winning major awards at Venice, Cannes, or Berlin, eliminating the need for country submissions. The International Feature Oscar will recognize both the film and its director rather than the country. New regulations assert that only human performances are eligible in acting categories, and all screenplays must be written by humans. Additionally, up to three awards can now be given for casting, along with stricter voting standards for makeup and visual effects.
