Oscar Murillo's wearable sculptures debut in Venice fashion show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Turner Prize winner Oscar Murillo (b. 1986, La Paila) concluded his Venice exhibition "A Storm Is Blowing From Paradise" with a runway show of 100 wearable sculptures from his Arepas y Tamales project. The exhibition ran from September 17 to November 27 at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, featuring new paintings, installations, sound and digital works, with a focus on Frequencies—over 40,000 canvases created by thousands of students aged 10–16 worldwide. The wearable sculptures incorporate 14 symbolic motifs drawn from the student canvases and are inspired by workers' uniforms, bridging labor and collectivity. Murillo invited fashion students from Venice and globally via open call to co-create accessories. The show took place within his final installation of black canvases from the Institute of Reconciliation series, where the performance Industrial Park (first staged in 2019) was also held, featuring readings from Patrícia Galvão's 1933 novel Parque Industrial: romance proletario.
