Orry Shenjobi's 'Peace and Love' Eyewear Merges Nsibidi Symbols with Contemporary Fashion
London-born, Lagos-raised artist Orry Shenjobi has created 'Peace and Love,' a video artwork presented by Moi Aussi that transforms eyewear into a celebration of Nigerian cultural heritage. The design incorporates Nsibidi, an ancient system of symbols from Southeastern Nigeria used for centuries to convey messages of peace and unity. Gold and black colors carry specific meanings—gold represents wealth and vibrancy, while black symbolizes strength and resilience. A matte finish references traditional Nsibidi carving materials like stone and wood. Shenjobi's multidisciplinary practice explores identity through photography and documentation, examining how cultural heritage, memory, and community shape self-perception. Moi Aussi is an artistic project with anthropological foundations that brings together 100 international artists to reimagine everyday objects as artworks. The organization plans to open a residency and gallery space at Venice's ExChiesa dell'Abbazia della Misericordia by late 2025. Marco Da Re handled videography, while Kevin Lee contributed photography. Through this work, Shenjobi creates dialogue between historical traditions and contemporary innovation while celebrating Nigerian visual culture.
