ORPilot: Production-Oriented AI for Optimization Modeling

ai-technology · 2026-05-06

A team of researchers has launched ORPilot, an open-source AI system that transforms complex business issues into optimization models ready for solving. Unlike traditional academic tools that rely on neatly formatted data and precise problem definitions, ORPilot adeptly manages vague descriptions and extensive raw operational datasets, ensuring compatibility with various solver backends. The system is equipped with four innovative features: a conversational agent for gathering comprehensive problem specifications, a data collection agent that autonomously retrieves necessary data, a parameter computation agent that connects raw tabular data to model parameters, and a solver-agnostic Intermediate Representation (IR) for seamless recompilation to Gurobi, CPLEX, PuLP, Pyomo, or OR-Tools. Additionally, self-correcting retry loops leverage solver tracebacks for efficient problem resolution. The research paper can be found on arXiv.
