Oro e colore: Trecento painting in Fabriano's Pinacoteca Civica
The exhibition 'Oro e colore' at the Pinacoteca Civica in Fabriano, housed in the former Spedale del Buon Gesù, presents 14th-century painting from the Marche region, focusing on Allegretto Nuzi and Francescuccio di Cecco Ghissi. Nuzi (ca. 1315–1373), born in Fabriano, trained in Tuscany under Giotto's influence and later worked with Orcagna and Simone Martini. Returning to Fabriano in 1347, he developed a distinctive pictorial style that influenced the International Gothic of Gentile da Fabriano. The show includes numerous panels, polyptychs, frescoes, and altarpieces from the Pinacoteca, the adjacent Museo Diocesano, local museums, private collections, and international loans such as from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A notable omission is the inaccessible fresco cycle by Allegretto in the Cappella di Sant'Orsola in San Domenico, still closed after the 2016 earthquake. The accompanying catalog features essays and research findings.
