Orlando Myxx's Gender Transition Documented in 'Orlando: in between' at Fondazione Fotografia Modena

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Orlando Myxx, a finalist of the European Photography Award alongside Sara Vighi, presents 'Orlando: in between' at Fondazione Fotografia Modena's The Summer Show 2016. The autobiographical project documents his gender transition from female to male, using photography and video to explore inner turmoil. Myxx began with 'Maschilità XX' (2012), a series on masculinity in XX-chromosome individuals, inspired by photographer Enrico Bossan. 'Orlando: the Origin' (2015) followed, using his body to express internal dynamics. The work references Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando: A Biography' and queer theory by Judith Butler and Judith Halberstam. Myxx aims to raise awareness of LGBT issues in Italy, where such topics struggle for recognition. The selected photo 'Orlando: not framed' (2016) depicts an ex-hospital interior, symbolizing the assignment of gender at birth.
