Orio Vergani, gallerist and art critic, dies at 49

Orio Vergani, a Milanese gallerist and art critic, died on March 22, 2024, at the Policlinico di Milano after a long battle with cancer. He was 49, and would have turned 50 on May 31. Vergani founded the nomadic exhibition space Nowhere in 2001, which became a permanent gallery in Milan in 2003, focusing on contemporary art, young Italian artists, art as social practice, and ecology. He worked as editorial consultant for Skira from 2003 to 2006, and wrote for Il Giorno/QN for ten years from 2009. He served as vice president of Startmilano from 2007 to 2013, and taught modern and contemporary art history at Accademia Raffles in Milan from 2018 to 2022. In recent years, he explored AI and blockchain for art, advising startups. His funeral will be private; the wake is open March 23-24 at via Corelli 120, Milan.
