Orgasmatron Redux: Norma Jeane's Pleasure Booth in Bologna
In Bologna, artist Norma Jeane has unveiled 'Orgasmatron Redux,' an interactive installation at Le Serre dei Giardini that combines sexual stimulation techniques. The booth, created with non-profit Kilowatt and MAMbo – Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, uses sheep wool and iron wool, pheromones (copulins, androstenol, androstenone), and binaural sound frequencies to induce arousal. Curator Lorenzo Balbi presented it as a device inspired by Wilhelm Reich's orgone theories, blending material and sonic stimulation. Due to COVID-19, only one person can enter at a time for up to 15 minutes. The piece opened September 1, 2021, in the new 'Serra Madre' area of the Serre dei Giardini Margherita. It follows a previous installation by the same artist at Art City in May 2021. Norma Jeane is a pseudonym adopted by a Los Angeles-born artist (class of 1962) referencing Marilyn Monroe's real name. The work's scientific basis remains unproven but not disproven, operating in an ambiguous placebo-effect zone.
