Oreste Martelli Castaldi: The Overlooked Genius of Postwar Italian Architecture
Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi profiles Oreste Martelli Castaldi (1927–2004), an underrecognized Italian architect known for his spatially generous villas built for wealthy clients between the 1970s and 1990s. Puglisi first encountered Castaldi's work when invited to lunch at a villa in a residential park in northern Rome, later learning it was designed by Castaldi. He later collaborated with Castaldi on a monograph, the only one published in Italy about the architect aside from articles by Renato Pedio in L'Architettura. Cronache e storia. Castaldi's architecture is characterized by four elements: relationship with the site, system of pathways, pursuit of psychological and material comfort, and attention to materials. He favored natural materials like wood, brick, and stone, but also used exposed reinforced concrete, as in Casa Dany. His houses are conceived as sequences of spaces (open, closed, compressed, introverted, semi-open) and are difficult to photograph. Castaldi was also a builder, often exceeding budgets because of his passion for architecture. He was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and organic architecture, but avoided formalism. Puglisi notes that Castaldi's work, while spatially magical, sometimes relied on solutions already tested by himself or his organic masters. The article is part of the 'Architetti d’Italia' series on Artribune.
