Orazio Borgianni's Roman Years at Palazzo Barberini
Palazzo Barberini in Rome presents the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Orazio Borgianni (Rome, 1574–1616), a decisive yet ephemeral figure in 17th-century Roman art. The show opened on June 11 after the lockdown and has been extended to November 1. Borgianni's most fertile creativity unfolded in just over a decade (c. 1605–1616) in Rome, cut short by his premature death. Though influenced by Caravaggio's dramatic naturalism, curator Gianni Papi emphasizes that Borgianni was not a follower but an innovator who developed a sophisticated, original language rooted in 16th-century Emilia (Correggio, Parmigianino, Lelio Orsi, young Ludovico Carracci) and Venice (Tintoretto, Bassano), blended with Spanish experience (El Greco) and direct contact with Caravaggio. The exhibition comprises two sections: eighteen paintings (two from the museum's permanent collection) summarize Borgianni's Roman activity, while a second section features artists whose creative vein was oriented by his ductus, including Antiveduto Gramatica, Giovanni Lanfranco, Simon Vouet, and Guido Cagnacci. A self-portrait by Borgianni (1614–15, oil on canvas) is also on view.
