Oran Biennale President on Algeria's Contemporary Art Scene

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Tewfik Ali Chaouche, the visionary behind the Biennale Méditerranéenne d'Art Contemporain d'Oran, reflects on the transformation of contemporary art in Algeria. Launched in 2010, the biennale evolved from Hadarett-el-ain (Civ.Oeil), which began in June 1997, shifting from an annual event to accommodate the rising interest of young artists in new media, with support from assistant curator Sadek Rahim. Backed by the city of Oran, the Ministry of Culture, private sponsors, and international cultural entities, the forthcoming edition, ART-MEDITERRANEE.ES, features curators Nadira Laggoune, Zineb Sedira, Marie de Paris, and Sadek Rahim, held at MAMO and Civ.Oeil gallery. Since 2011, Algeria's cultural landscape has flourished, with numerous festivals and prospective international partnerships on the horizon.
