Oprah Winfrey sells Klimt painting to Chinese collector for $150M
Oprah Winfrey has reportedly sold Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II" (1912) to an unidentified Chinese collector for $150 million in a private sale. The talk show host had acquired the painting at Christie's in 2006 for $87.9 million, making a substantial profit. Meanwhile, Sotheby's London will auction another Klimt masterpiece, "Bauerngarten," on March 1, 2017, as part of its Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale. The work was previously exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts' "Painting the Modern Garden" show. Helena Newman, Sotheby's Europe Chairman and International Co-Head of Impressionist & Modern Art, noted that Klimt paintings of this caliber are held by major museums and few have appeared on the market in the last decade.
