Opera Queensland's Festival of Outback Opera brings opera to remote towns
Opera Queensland is celebrating its sixth year of the Festival of Outback Opera, taking the beauty of opera to remote areas in Queensland like Winton and Longreach. This year's festivities include spontaneous performances, cultural talks, and the Dark Sky Serenade gala held at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, which is noted as a Dark Sky Sanctuary. The gala, led by Richard Mills and featuring Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, presented works by composers such as Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, and Mozart, with talented singers like Filipe Manu and Katie Stenzel gracing the stage. The highlight was the world premiere of Dark Sky Soundscape, specially commissioned by Opera Queensland. Artistic Director Patrick Nolan emphasized the vital role of community engagement. The festival aims to boost tourism and support environmental efforts, with the next event set for May 11 to 17, 2027.
