Opera Gallery Dubai presents Calder and Hiquily in dialogue
Opera Gallery Dubai will host 'Calder/Hiquily: Balancing Act' from April 15 to May 4, 2025, featuring 8 works on paper and 21 sculptures by Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and Philippe Hiquily (1925-2013). The exhibition explores their shared interest in movement, balance, and industrial materials. Calder, a mechanical engineer turned artist, pioneered mobiles and kinetic sculpture, exemplified by his 1953 mobile 'New Old Universe'. Hiquily, influenced by Calder, created his 'Girouette' series—weathervane-like sculptures that move with the wind, such as 'Girouette Hiver' (2013-20). Both artists used metals like aluminum and steel, blending industrial aesthetics with playful anthropomorphism. The show also includes seven of Calder's gouache and ink works on paper. Opera Gallery Dubai Director Sylvain Gaillard stated that the exhibition highlights how Calder's innovations paved the way for Hiquily's visual language, set against Dubai's balance of tradition and innovation.
