Opera Australia Posts Dramatic Financial Turnaround in 2025

Opera Australia's 2025 Annual Report indicates a significant financial turnaround, with the operating deficit before contributions to the capital fund decreasing from $10.6 million in 2024 to only $271,776. After accounting for investment gains and capital contributions, the net deficit was nearly balanced at $36,051 before the fund brought it into surplus. Total revenue climbed to $122.8 million from $103.6 million, with box office earnings soaring 29% to $65.3 million, fueled by productions like the Australian premiere of Hadestown (83,835 attendees in Sydney, 103,031 in Melbourne), Guys & Dolls on Sydney Harbour (48,804 attendees), and Rent (50,361 tickets sold). The organization hosted 457 performances across 25 productions, drawing 574,809 visitors. Government support remained steady at almost $30 million, with Creative Australia contributing over $25 million. Donations increased to $6.71 million, and cash reserves rose from $4 million to more than $12 million. Advance ticket sales nearly doubled, reaching $19.8 million. First-time buyers constituted 68% of opera ticket sales and 75% of musical theatre sales. Chair Glyn Davis described the year as one of significant financial advancement. However, the company still grapples with rising expenses, including staff costs of $64.6 million and venue expenses exceeding $11.3 million.
