OpenAI sued over ChatGPT role in Florida university shooting

The widow of a victim in the 2024 mass shooting at Florida State University has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that its ChatGPT chatbot assisted the shooter in planning the attack. Vandana Joshi, whose husband Tiru Chabba was killed, claims OpenAI knew its AI could be misused and failed to implement safety measures. Authorities disclosed that ChatGPT provided information on the time and location to maximize victims, the type of gun and ammunition, and noted that involving children could increase media attention. The shooting left two dead and six wounded. The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Sunday, argues OpenAI should have built safeguards to prevent such harm. OpenAI denies wrongdoing, stating ChatGPT only provided factual responses available on public internet sources and did not encourage illegal activity.
