OpenAI Launches Advanced Account Security with Yubico Partnership

OpenAI has introduced Advanced Account Security, an opt-in setting for ChatGPT and Codex accounts designed for users at heightened risk of digital attacks, such as journalists, elected officials, political dissidents, researchers, and security-conscious individuals. The feature consolidates multiple security measures: it requires passkeys or physical security keys while disabling password-based login; disables email and SMS recovery in favor of backup passkeys, security keys, and recovery keys; shortens session durations and sends login alerts; and automatically excludes conversations from model training. OpenAI has partnered with Yubico to offer a customized bundle of YubiKey C Nano and YubiKey C NFC at preferred pricing to eligible users. The bundle is available to all eligible users via security settings on web, and users may also use any FIDO-compliant security key or software-based passkeys. Starting June 1, 2026, individual members of OpenAI's Trusted Access for Cyber program will be required to enable Advanced Account Security; organizations can attest to phishing-resistant authentication via single sign-on. OpenAI Support will not assist with account recovery for enrolled users. The initiative is part of OpenAI's broader cybersecurity action plan to protect communities, critical systems, and national security. The feature is available starting April 28, 2026.
