Open Society Foundations Awards $100,000 Fellowships to 18 Artists for Climate Crisis Projects
The 2023 Soros Arts Fellowship, established by George Soros through the Open Society Foundations, has been granted to 18 mid-career artists, each awarded $100,000 to pursue projects focused on the climate crisis. This year's theme, 'Art, Land and Public Memory,' influenced the selection process, resulting in the largest group of fellows supported by the foundation. In addition to funding, the fellowship provides opportunities for leadership growth and networking. Notable recipients include Bilia Bah, who is developing a theater production in Conakry, Guinea; Yto Barrada, who aims to enhance botanical knowledge in Tangier, Morocco; and Mónica de Miranda, who is capturing migration narratives in Lisbon, Portugal. Tatiana Mouarbes highlighted the significance of art in driving social change and the necessity for community-based environmental solutions. The complete list of fellows is available online.
