Open Architecture to design major aerospace exhibition for Sydney's Powerhouse Parramatta
Open Architecture, a prominent studio based in Beijing and co-founded by the married couple Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, has been selected to create the inaugural exhibition for Powerhouse Parramatta in Sydney, set to debut in late 2026. Named Task Eternal, this immersive aerospace exhibition draws inspiration from Ted Chiang's short story The Tower of Babylon. It will be housed in Ps1, Australia's largest museum venue, which boasts over 2,100 square meters of space and a height of 18 meters. Known for innovative structures like the 50-meter-tall Sun Tower, the studio favors collaborative development over detailed client briefs. For Task Eternal, they partnered with the Powerhouse Museum's curatorial team to design a narrative with 35 scenes across four acts: Skyward, Power, Off-Earth, and The Return, encouraging contemplation on humanity's expansionism and the significance of Earth. Established in 2008, Open Architecture has recently ventured into housing with the Nanshan Commune project in Shenzhen, addressing various design aspects. Their documentary, Nature Trilogy, featuring projects like the UCCA Dune Art Museum, premiered at this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, reflecting their belief in a nature-centric approach to sustainability.
