OPEN Architecture's PTFE-clad Cube of Change arts center rises in Xiamen
OPEN Architecture has designed the Cube of Change: Meitu Cube Visual Arts Center in Xiamen, China, a compact cubic volume wrapped in a perforated double-layer PTFE facade. The building sits between parkland and the coastline, raised on slender supports to maintain ground-level permeability. Inside, interconnected volumes include a black-box gallery, a white-box ocean-facing space, and areas for exhibitions, screenings, and gatherings. A red spiral staircase links all levels, leading to a rooftop terrace with a circular canopy and seating steps facing the sea for performances. The facade filters daylight into a muted glow and emits light at night. Sustainable features include operable openings for natural ventilation, rain gardens, permeable surfaces, and rooftop solar panels. The 12,200-square-meter center is under construction with completion expected in 2028. The client is Xiamen Meitu Cube Cultural Development Co., Ltd. Consultants include China Academy of Building Research, RFR, dUCKS scéno, ECADI, Landtek Group, and Gradient Lighting Design.
