Open-Air Museum of Peasant Memory in Casalciprano, Molise

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

In the Molise hinterland, the small village of Casalciprano hosts an open-air museum dedicated to peasant memory, inaugurated in 2011 by then-mayor Franco Francesco Miranda. The project, curated by art historian Lorenzo Canova in collaboration with the University of Molise, involved six Italian artists—Adriano Nardi, Marco Verrelli, Mauro Di Silvestre, Francesco Cervelli, Stefania Fabrizi, and Marco Colazzo—who created large-scale murals and installations across the village. The works reinterpret local agricultural and artisanal traditions through contemporary visual languages. Notable pieces include Nardi's mural of Kate Moss beside the village bell tower, Verrelli's depiction of a vintage tractor driven by a crash-test dummy, Di Silvestre's image of a newborn in a cradle, Cervelli's forest scene, Fabrizi's wheat harvester, and Colazzo's work dedicated to play. The museum also features bronze statues of local figures engaged in traditional trades, displayed in renovated abandoned houses, and statues of children playing and grazing animals in alleys and squares. The project aims to preserve and revitalize collective identity, attracting school groups, travelers, and contemporary art enthusiasts. Miranda emphasized that every village, however small, holds valuable cultural heritage. The museum stands as a model of cultural resilience, blending art, history, and community engagement.
