Onofrio Cutaia appointed Campania's new culture councilor
Onofrio Cutaia, a seasoned cultural manager, has been appointed as the new Assessore alla Cultura (Culture Councilor) for the Campania region by Governor Roberto Fico. Cutaia, born in Catania in 1959, previously served as Director General for Contemporary Creativity at the Ministry of Culture from 2021 to 2023, appointed by Dario Franceschini. He later became extraordinary commissioner of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano. His career includes roles as director of the Teatro Mercadante in Naples (2002-2007), where it became a public theater, and Director General for Theater and Dance promotion at ETI (2007-2010). He also served as Director General for Tourism Policies (2014-2015) and Director General for Live Entertainment (2015-2020). In 2025, Minister Alessandro Giuli named him extraordinary commissioner of the Fondazione Scuola dei beni e delle attività culturali. Cutaia was also commissioner of the Italian Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale. The culture councilor position had been vacant for years, previously held by outgoing governor Vincenzo De Luca. Cutaia also takes on delegations for Events and Personnel. In his first interview, he emphasized the responsibility of public action and the need to bring non-traditional audiences to cultural venues like theaters, museums, archives, and archaeological sites.
