Onoaa Studio designs minimalist Shanghai showroom for Sigma photography brand

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

Chinese design firm Onoaa Studio has completed a 500-square-metre showroom in Shanghai for Japanese photography equipment manufacturer Sigma, established in 1973. The minimalist interior, divided into three zones, highlights Sigma's heritage and craftsmanship. Cameras and lenses are centrally displayed, with a ten-metre-wide wall featuring over 100 lenses on angled metal fins. A reception area with white concrete walls, grey handmade bricks, and a dark blue wool-inlaid service desk reflects the brand's 'pure' aesthetic and its scenic mountain factory location in Bandai near Aizuwakamatsu. A repair room with illuminated ceilings and visible workstations offers a laboratory-like setting, while a photography gallery with black-metal frames and sheer white screens underscores Sigma's dedication to the art. The showroom, named Sigma Space, is shortlisted in the large retail interior category at the 2025 Dezeen Awards, alongside projects like Supreme's Miami store and Tianjin Zhongshuge bookshop. Photography for the project is by Jonathan Leijonhufvud.
