Omer Fast's Three Films at James Cohan Explore Narrative and Privilege

exhibition · 2026-05-01

Omer Fast's exhibition at James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea (March 25 to May 7, 2016) features three digitally produced films: '5,000 Feet is the Best' (2011), 'Continuity' (2012), and 'Spring' (2016). The works employ open, circular narratives with multiple viewpoints, addressing political, psychological, and racial themes. '5,000 Feet is the Best' is based on an interview with a real drone pilot and stars Denis O'Hare from 'True Blood'; it uses blurred narration and suburban imagery to bridge the distance between drone operations in Las Vegas and Afghanistan. 'Spring' includes a shocking bicycle collision shown from two perspectives. Fast's films are produced in editions of six, raising questions about accessibility and privilege in art galleries versus cinematic platforms. The exhibition requires at least two hours to view and is discussed at The Review Panel, Brooklyn Public Library, April 2016. Fast is also producing a feature-length film, 'Remainder', based on Tom McCarthy's novel.
