This award, created by Stella Miles Franklin's will, celebrates a novel that exemplifies 'the highest literary merit' and depicts 'Australian life in any of its phases.' Musa, who was shortlisted for the first time, will receive $60,000. Judges hailed 'Fierceland' as a 'tour de force' that addresses the devastation of Borneo's rainforests, featuring rhythmic prose that resonates with defiance. The story centers on siblings Harun and Rozana as they navigate their father's legacy as a palm-oil baron in Sabah. Musa thanked his family, editors, and Borneo's natural beauty. The 2026 judging panel included Richard Neville (Chair), Jumana Bayeh, Mridula Nath Chakraborty, Tony Hughes-d'Aeth, and Maggie Nolan, with Perpetual acting as Trustee.
