Omar Gandhi Architecture's 'Crafted by Place' at Architektur Galerie Berlin

The Architektur Galerie Berlin presents 'Crafted by Place', an exhibition of works by Omar Gandhi Architecture (OGA), the Canadian studio founded by Omar Gandhi in 2010. OGA, now active in Halifax, Toronto, and Berlin, has received numerous accolades including the Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome, Architectural Record Magazine's 2018 Design Vanguard, and the Canadian Governor General's Medal in Architecture. The exhibition, open until October 25, features not just models but a scenographic recreation of the intense relationship with landscape that defines OGA's practice. Local wood species evoke the materiality of Canadian coasts, while mosses and plants provide sensory connections to nature. Projects on display include rural cabins and residences in Nova Scotia, the celebrated observation point at Peggy's Cove lighthouse, and the winning design for the new Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on Halifax's waterfront, secured in 2020. The gallery, founded by Ulrich Müller, describes OGA as 'a refined, rugged, and quietly radical practice.' OGA's method, as articulated by Gandhi and partner Jordan Rice, ensures continuity even as the studio expands into Europe with private residential projects in Hamburg, Paris, and England. The approach begins with the same questions and desire for dialogue, leading to necessarily different but consistently sensitive and quietly radical responses.
