Oman Pavilion at Venice Biennale Explores Haven and Multiculturalism
Curator Alia Al Farsi discusses the Omani Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, titled 'Malath – Haven'. The exhibition, running until 24 November 2024, responds to the Biennale theme 'Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere' by showcasing works from five Omani artists. Al Farsi explains that 'malath' means safe space or port in Arabic, reflecting Oman's history of inclusivity. The pavilion features Dr Ali Al Jabri's 'Water' combining wood and marble, Sarah Al Olaqi's 'Breaking Bread' exploring food and identity, Essa Al Mufarji's 'Madad' on language influences, Adham Al Farsi's video 'The Fate of Outsiders' using turtles as metaphor, and Alia Al Farsi's own 'Alia’s Alleys' immersive installation. The curator emphasizes a collective approach to highlight interconnectedness and challenge stereotypes about Arab culture. This is the second edition of the Omani Pavilion at Venice.
