OMA to Transform Turin's Egyptian Museum for Bicentennial

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The Museo Egizio in Turin is set to undergo a significant architectural redesign by OMA, under the direction of Rem Koolhaas, in anticipation of its 200th anniversary in 2024. This initiative will introduce a glass and steel structure above the internal courtyard, known as Piazza Egizia, which will feature a public area that includes an Egyptian garden, a café, a bookshop, and a ticket office, expanding the museum by 975 square meters. Access will be provided through three entrances located on via Accademia delle Scienze, via Duse, and via Maria Vittoria. Construction is slated to commence in March 2024 with an investment of €23 million. Director Christian Greco emphasized the museum's aim to be "transparent, permeable, and inclusive." The bicentennial festivities will kick off on January 1, 2024, with a concert by the Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino, conducted by Giampaolo Pretto.
