OMA to Renovate Moscow's New Tretyakov Gallery
Rem Koolhaas's OMA has been commissioned to renovate the New Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, following previous work at the State Hermitage Museum and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. The gallery, housed since the 1980s in a 61,000-square-meter complex designed by N.P. Sukoyan and Y.N. Sheverdyaev, holds a major collection of 20th-century Russian and Soviet art, with a focus on contemporary trends. OMA's plan divides the museum into four functional sectors: Art Storage, Education Center, The Collection, and Festival Hall, each connected to a new riverside pedestrian path. Color and material schemes will improve visibility and circulation, with escalators enhancing internal movement. Separately, OMA's MPavilion 2017 in Melbourne, funded by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, attracted over 117,000 visitors and hosted 477 free events. It was named by Wallpaper* magazine among the top buildings that shaped culture in 2017, alongside projects like the Concrete cultural center in Dubai and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.
