OMA's Dubai arts venue design revealed with moving walls for flexible events
Rem Koolhaas's OMA studio presented designs for a new multi-purpose arts space on Alserkal Avenue in Dubai during Dubai Art Week, with Dezeen reporting the venue is scheduled to open this fall. The project transforms four warehouses, incorporating four 8.10 metre-high moving walls that slide and rotate to adapt to various events like performances, large-scale exhibitions, and conferences. OMA's Iyad Alsaka explained the design strategy aims to blur boundaries between interior and exterior by bringing in daylight and views while extending activities to the public square. Alserkal Avenue, established in 2007, has evolved into a cultural district hosting international galleries such as Ayyam Gallery from Beirut and London, Leila Heller Gallery from New York, the Third Line in Dubai, and recently Waddington Custot from London. The complex also includes alternative art spaces, design and media studios, a black-box theatre, and an independent cinema, reflecting a shift toward non-commercial dynamics.
