OMA Completes Pierre Lassonde Pavilion at Quebec City Museum of Fine Arts
OMA, in collaboration with local architects Provencher Roy, has completed a 14,900-square-meter expansion of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City, Canada. The new Pierre Lassonde Pavilion increases the museum's exhibition space by 90%. Designed as a series of three stacked, partially transparent boxes, the pavilion includes a 50m x 50m volume for temporary exhibitions, a 45m x 35m volume for the permanent collection, and a 42.5m x 25m volume for design. The cantilevered structure is supported by a steel lattice system, eliminating internal columns and allowing flexible layouts connected by a helical staircase. The top volume extends 20 meters over the street, creating a public plaza. Shohei Shigematsu, OMA partner, describes the pavilion as a link between the city, park, and museum. Rooftop terraces host outdoor exhibitions and activities.
