Olson Kundig's Daisy Ranch: A Modern Log Cabin on Salt Spring Island

architecture-design · 2026-05-07

Olson Kundig has completed Daisy Ranch, a residence on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. The house is composed of two linear volumes: one clad in heavy square-cut logs and the other in glass framed by weathered steel and wood. A deep cantilevered roof extends over terraces and circulation, with steel cladding that has developed a rust-colored patina blending into the rocky terrain. Inside, an open-plan southern volume houses the kitchen, dining, and living areas, centered around a wood-burning stove with a custom circular steel firewood holder. A large mural by a Vancouver-based artist adds color to the restrained palette. The northern volume contains bedrooms and a primary suite with selective openings framing views. A glazed corridor connects the two sections. Outdoor features include a picnic table and a half-pipe for skateboarding. The project was developed with the homeowner acting as general contractor. Photography is by Andrew Latreille.
