Olson Kundig completes Sky View house with retractable roof in Idaho
Olson Kundig Architects, a US-based firm, has finalized the construction of Sky View, a 7,190-square-foot residence located in Sun Valley, Idaho, which boasts a retractable roof. This home provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, encompassing both mountains and sky. According to design principal Tom Kundig, the structure is "very much of the landscape," taking advantage of the arroyo's coolness while framing the vistas. The lounge on the top floor features a handwheel-operated roof that allows residents to connect with the night sky. Designed to suit its location, the house has a secluded side facing the arroyo and elevated living areas. Durable materials like concrete and steel siding were selected. Project collaborators include BYLA for landscape architecture, Maxwell Structural Design Studio for structural engineering, Niteo for lighting design, and KB Architectural Services.
