Oliviero Toscani's provocations and failures on display at MAR Ravenna
The MAR museum in Ravenna hosts the first institutional retrospective of photographer Oliviero Toscani, structured around the themes of 'provocations' and 'failures'. The exhibition features three nuclei of photographs, including around one hundred small-format prints that mix covers for Elle, Rolling Stone, Colors, fashion shoots, portraits, and images for Fiorucci and United Colors of Benetton. Also on view are large-format iconic works, the series 'Razza Umana' (started in 2007, one portrait donated to MAR), and a focus on New York from the early 1970s capturing Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and a young Patti Smith. Two videos produced by Sky Arte accompany the show. Toscani returned to Fabrica as artistic director in 2018 alongside Luciano Benetton, after an 18-year hiatus triggered by a controversial anti-death penalty campaign.
