Oliviero Toscani's Photography and Provocation Retrospective Opens in Zurich
The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich presents 'Oliviero Toscani: Photography and Provocation', a retrospective of the Milanese photographer and advertising creative, running until January 5, 2025. Curated by museum director Christian Brändle, the exhibition spans Toscani's six-decade career, from early black-and-white works to iconic campaigns like those for Benetton and the famous Jesus Jeans poster 'Chi mi ama mi segua' and the 1992 'Bacio tra prete e suora'. The show features immersive displays with videos and extensive captions. A highlight is the collective project 'Razza Umana', for which Toscani photographed over 10,000 people in public squares, creating a vast archive of human diversity. Toscani, who studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, described creativity as being bombarded by reality's signals and details. The exhibition draws from his autobiography 'Ne ho fatte di tutti i colori', published by La Nave di Teseo for his 80th birthday.
