Oliviero Toscani's 50 Years of Magnificent Failures at Castello Aragonese
The first retrospective of Oliviero Toscani in Puglia is taking place at the Castello Aragonese in Otranto, curated by Nicolas Bellisario and coordinated by Lorenzo Madaro. Entitled 'Oliviero Toscani. Più di cinquant’anni di magnifici fallimenti', the exhibition showcases over 100 photographs from Toscani's extensive career. Highlights include his 1970s fashion work for Vogue, Elle, and Harper's Bazaar, as well as notable Benetton campaigns such as 'Bacio tra prete e suora' (1991), 'Tre cuori White/Black/Yellow' (1996), and 'No Anorexia' (2007). Featured are portraits of cultural icons like Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger. Recent pieces from 'Razza Umana', a socio-political project with Achille Bonito Oliva, capture human faces globally. The exhibition, produced by Theutra in partnership with the Comune di Otranto, includes multimedia set design by Farm di Antonio Galloso. Toscani, a Milan native born in 1942, was influenced by his father, Fedele Toscani, a photojournalist. His provocative Benetton campaigns, beginning in 1982, confronted societal issues such as racism and AIDS, leading to conflicts with figures like Gavino Sanna of Mulino Bianco.
