Olivier Millagou Transforms Galerie Erna Hécey into a Rock Garage

exhibition · 2026-04-23

French artist Olivier Millagou (born 1974, lives and works in Bandol) turned Galerie Erna Hécey in Luxembourg into a garage-cum-rehearsal space, painted black with matching carpet and walls punctuated by heavy metal logos made from gold pins. The installation, titled 'Muscle Beach Party', included a turntable playing a guitar solo on a vinyl record pressed for the occasion. Millagou critiques the 1960s image of wholesome surfing youth by juxtaposing it with the darker, depraved rock stereotype. Another work featured offset-printed postcards inspired by 1960s beach scenes and pin-ups, commenting on reproducibility and the American dream. The back room hosted sculptural works by Nedko Solakov, John Armleder, Doris Drescher, Peter Friedl, and Marijke van Warmerdam, creating a contrast between Millagou's black box and the white cube. The exhibition ran from November 29, 2003 to January 31, 2004.
