Oliver Jeffers installs solar system model along Irish river

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Artist Oliver Jeffers, in collaboration with the Nerve Centre creative team, has created 'Our Place in Space,' a scale model of the solar system (1:591 million) stretching 8.5 km along the River Foyle in Derry/Londonderry. The installation runs until May 22. The journey begins at the Sun on Bay Road Park, continues along Quayside through the city center, over Craigavon Bridge, and along Waterside Greenway to Pluto. Walking the full route takes 2.5–3 hours; organizers suggest multiple visits. An augmented reality app supports the experience, tracking steps, collecting souvenirs, and providing educational content. The installation will travel to other locations: Belfast (June 10–July 10, 10 km trail from Divis to Black Mountain), Cambridge (July 30–August 28, along the river from Midsummer Common to Waterbeach), and finally at the Ulster Transport Museum, North Down Coastal Path, and Crawfordsburn Country Park to Bangor Pier (September 17–October 16).
