exhibition · 2026-04-24

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is set to present "Olayami Dabls: Detroit Cosmologies," which will be the first major retrospective of Dabls, also known as "Bead Man." This exhibition will take place from April 25 to July 12, 2026, and will showcase 45 years of his artistic work. Visitors can expect to see a variety of pieces, including paintings, collages, sculptures, and public art that blend African symbolism with African American history and Detroit's industrial scene. Dabls, born in 1948, began his artistic journey in the 1970s at the Afro-American Museum in Detroit. He later founded the MBAD African Bead Museum and has created significant outdoor installations that serve as community spaces.
