Olafur Eliasson’s Multifaceted Practice: From Louis Vuitton to Little Sun
Olafur Eliasson’s first monographic exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, 'Olafur Eliasson: Contact,' runs from December 17, 2014 to February 16, 2015. The building, designed by Frank Gehry, opened in October 2014. Eliasson also created a permanent installation, 'Inside the Horizon,' for the Grotto corridor, featuring 43 triangular columns with mirrored faces and hand-tinted yellow glass mosaic. The artist discusses his studio in Prenzlauerberg, Berlin, which employs 80 people and functions like a Renaissance workshop. His 'Your Uncertain Archive' is an online, cloud-based, intuitive archive of his work. The Institute for Spatial Experiments (Ifrex), a five-year school founded with the Berlin University of the Arts (UDK), concluded with the Festival for Future Nows (Oct 30–Nov 1, 2014) at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Eliasson’s social business, Little Sun, produces solar lamps distributed in museums and nine African countries. He also collaborated with geologist Minik Rosing on 'Ice Watch' in Copenhagen, transporting 100 tons of Greenland ice blocks to highlight climate change. The interview covers his views on uncertainty, navigation, and the interconnection of art, environment, and social engagement.
